Wander over Watership Down in Eccinswell, North Hampshire
Watership Down is one of those unforgettable childhood stories, probably because it teaches us that life isn’t always fluffy bunnies and perfect. But perfect rolling green hills is certainly what you will find if you take a worthwhile literary pilgrimage to Watership Down in North Hampshire.
We always head to the quaint village of Eccinswell to set off on our adventure. Have a word with the staff at the fantastic Royal Oak and they’ll be happy for you to park so you can return there for a well-deserved local ale afterwards.
This is a proper leg-stretcher that will take you out into open countryside, over fells and through woodland. The chalky landscape is all curvy hills and gorgeous views. You’ll pass Nuthanger Farm, which plays a major role in the novel. You’ll also take in a disused railway line, a bronze-age hill fort and the lovely hamlet of Old Burghclere.
Then it’s back to the Royal Oak for that ale, and, if it takes your fancy, a healthy portion of rabbit pie for all your efforts.
