Admiring beautifully carved tombs on a gloomy day at Nunhead Cemetery

A favourite local walk of mine is through the well-worn tracks of Nunhead Cemetery. Being one of the seven great Victorian cemeteries in London it is overrun with original planting weaving its way in and out of tombs and uprooting anything that gets in its path.

I love the gothic feel you get when walking around (in my opinion, best visited on a gloomy day) and it almost feels, just for a moment, that you’re living in the Victorian period. The grounds are wonderfully big, perfect for dog walkers and joggers, and it is now a nature reserve so keep your eyes peeled for the local inhabitants.

The cemetery contains a fascinating mix of simpler, newer plaques and much more grand and beautifully carved tombs. Every time I visit I find something new and interesting that catches my eye!

TiYK Top Tip! On the last Sunday of the month at 2.15pm they hold a free guided tour.
