Enjoying Hampshire’s finest fare at Winchester Farmers Market
My favourite way to spend a Sunday morning has to be at Winchester’s fantastic farmer’s market. Being the largest farmers market in the UK, food lovers like myself are spoilt for choice. There are ninety-five stalls boasting delicious local cheeses; quality poultry, meat and game; locally grown fruit and veg; local apple juice and fresh seafood. I always make sure I get there early so as not to miss out on the very best seasonal produce on offer, whether it’s the first of the asparagus in spring or autumnal apples.
I like to spend time browsing the stalls to see what’s on offer, testing the delicious samples and chatting with the friendly producers to find out about what they are selling and how it has been produced. There are some really fantastic cheesemakers in the area and I never go home without at least one hunk of cheese…but I wouldn’t want to spoil the fun of sampling them by telling you which is my favourite!
Once I have filled my basket to overflowing with delicious goodies, I’m off home to cook up a storm with all those lovely fresh, seasonal ingredients. A late, post-market Sunday lunch must be the best meal of the week!
