Foodie delights at the award-winning Brockley Market in Lewisham

My favourite place to eat at the moment is a local authority car park off the A20 – albeit one with bunting draped around the trees and homemade wooden tables and benches. Brockley Market opened in Lewisham College’s car park last September and while I love the fact that I can stock up with local produce (great bread and cakes, including the best Eccles cakes ever from Aston bakery, and fruit and veg from Perry Court Farm etc), what I keep going back for week after week – in fact nearly every Saturday since it opened – is the street food.

There are Polish pancakes from Blintz Boy, mega burgers from Mother Flipper, BLTs from Red Herring and all sorts of globally inspired scotch eggs from The Egg Boss. For me, it’s usually a toss up between Luardos lovely burritos, cooked up in their pink van, or Mike+Ollie’s fantastic Lebanese flatbreads which come with all manner of smoked and foraged delights.

One of the really great things about Brockley is the community spirit and friendly atmosphere. Local photographer Toby Allen, who set up the market, is encouraging people to leave their cars at home and arrive on foot or cycle. Setting an example to us all is Mike Richardson of Mike+Ollie who brings everything he needs, including huge pans and an amazing array of ingredients, piled high on his bike.

TIYK Top Tip! Good food (and coffee) takes time so do be prepared to queue. You never know who you might get chatting to while you wait. One week it was a woman who was going to work for a charity in Nepal, the next it was someone whose young daughter has just been filming with Brad Pitt.
